Doing well in answering science homework

Homework is a bit of a chore in many subjects.

The good thing about science homework is that what you are studying is genuinely interesting. The trick to doing well at science homework is to be very careful in reading and understanding the question. And then making sure that you answer the question given.

That's because in science at GCSE and A-level often the marker will be looking out for specific words and phrases in your answer. Therefore be accurate and avoid words like "stuff" but rather be accurate. If you are describing a reaction say what you see - a yellow powder was created in an exothermic reaction - for instance, rather than "some stuff was created in a reaction".

I'm sure other people have useful science homework tips - maybe you can post them here to start to build up a useful resource for those faced with tackling science homework.

As a follow-up to the above which emphasises reading the question then answering precisely, here's another simple tip:

Once you have done a piece of homework, note down the key words, vocabulary and ideas that you have used in that piece of work.

It sounds boring and laborious and adds a few minutes extra work each time, BUT when it comes to exams and revising it will be a breeze because you will have all the key points readily at your fingertips made at the time when you understood the topic most.

The reason most find revision so hard is that, to be honest, it is really re-learning, or learning for the first time. By taking the time to cement ideas in your head and note down the key points when you actually study them not only do you increase your chance of remembering them later on, but also if you do forget them you will be able to pick up the key points and ideas from these notes when it comes to revision and exam time.
